Preparing for Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2005

Ash Wednesday is an ancient holy day in the Christian church calendar. It marks the beginning of the season of Lent—a time of repentance, discipline, and renewal. In the Ash Wednesday service we are reminded of our mortality, we confess our sins, and we experience forgiveness through Christ’s death and resurrection. The “imposition of ashes” is a central part of the service. During this time you are invited to come forward to receive the ashes on your forehead.

As we gather on this Ash Wednesday, we will briefly sing, receive ashes for those who desire it, have a time of confession and repentance, and then pray over the needs and vision of our church and community then be dismissed. We will also be giving out “Psalms of Ascent”, our Lenten Prayer guide for this year. Please join us as we begin our journey through Lent.

Ash Wednesday Services:

Wednesday, February 18th at the Poffenberger’s  Home, 20402 Canyon Lake Dr., Tomball, TX 77377

Here are some songs we’ll sing:

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed

Chorus: Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son!

Hail in the time appointed, His reign on earth begun!

1. He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free,
To take away transgression, and rule in equity. (Chorus)

2. He comes in succor speedy to those who suffer wrong,
To help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong.

3. To give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light,
Whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in His sight. (Chorus)

4. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth,
Love, joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in His path to birth. (Chorus)

5. The tide of time shall never His covenant remove.
His Name shall stand forever, That Name to us is Love. (Chorus)

From the Depths of Woe, Psalm 130
